Retiring AI infrastructure is an inventory problem wearing an engineering problem's clothes
An AI rack is not one asset. It is dozens of components with different sanitization requirements, wildly different residual values, and one shared deadline. Treating it as a single line item is how organizations under-sanitize and under-recover at the same time.
Why we are building this now
The category is being defined by people who have not read the standards
Retiring accelerated computing infrastructure has become a service category faster than it has become a discipline. A great deal of what is currently published about it is confident, technical-sounding, and wrong — including claims of standards-compliant sanitization for components that no standard addresses.
We are entering this category early and deliberately, and we are doing it by publishing what we can actually support rather than what would sound most impressive.
That means a clearly drawn scope. Some of this work we do today, with our own engineers and our own field crews. Some of it is genuinely outside our current capability, and this page names those parts rather than hoping nobody asks. We think that distinction is worth more to a procurement team than another page of adjectives.

Serialized intake inventory
Every accelerator, chassis, switch, transceiver, drive and memory module recorded as an asset in its own right against your register. An AI chassis is dozens of line items with different sanitization requirements and very different residual values.

On-site technical execution
Our national field crews perform the physical decommissioning — equipment removal, de-racking within the managed project scope, labelling, packaging and staging — under the plan agreed in phase one and against the inventory built in phase two.

Custody and transport
Manifested, sealed and moved under an unbroken custody record into our R2v3 and RIOS certified facility in Lewisville, Texas. Reconciliation against the opening inventory happens at receiving, not at closeout.

Storage media sanitization
Every drive in the estate — the NVMe in the compute trays, the boot media, the storage tier — sanitized against NIST 800-88 Revision 2 by media type, with a certificate issued per serial. An asset without a passing record cannot advance.

Four things that change the disposition decision
The drives are the data risk, and there are a lot of them
A single high-density AI rack can hold ninety or more NVMe devices across its compute and switch trays, before you count boot media or the management controllers. Those drives held datasets, checkpoints and model weights. They are also the part of the system with a real, standards-backed sanitization path — which is exactly why they should be inventoried and certified individually rather than counted by chassis.
Memory is where the recovered value actually is right now
DRAM pricing has moved further and faster than accelerator pricing over the last two years. In a retired AI estate, the memory is frequently worth more, and is far easier to grade and place, than the marketing around accelerator resale would suggest.
The interconnect is an asset class of its own
High-speed fabric switches, transceivers and cabling depreciate on a much cleaner curve than accelerators and, unlike matched accelerator sets, they are fungible — a switch is a switch. In several estates the fabric is the single most liquid line in the inventory.
Packaging decides what a set is worth
Accelerators mounted to a shared baseboard are sold as a matched set, because the buyer wants the fabric that connects them. Splitting a set to sell units individually destroys value. Card-format accelerators behave completely differently. Valuing a retired system as though it were the sum of its loose parts is the most common and most expensive error in this category.
The question everyone avoids
There is no standard for sanitizing an accelerator. We would rather tell you that.
What the standards actually cover
NIST 800-88 Revision 2, finalised in September 2025, defines how to sanitize information storage media. It does not address accelerators, on-package memory or device firmware. IEEE 2883-2022, which it defers to for technique-level detail, covers storage devices and interfaces. Neither one reaches the accelerator.
What the manufacturers publish
Every major manufacturer erase utility in this market covers the drives, the persistent memory and the management controller, and stops there. The accelerator is out of scope for all of them. That is not an oversight we can work around with a procedure of our own invention.
What we therefore do
We sanitize and certify what can be sanitized and certified — the storage media, per serial, to the standard. We record the handling of everything else. And we tell you in writing which components carry a certificate and which do not, so your compliance file reflects what actually happened rather than what a marketing page implied.

Confirmed capability, and the parts we are explicit about not claiming
This is the section most providers leave out. It is also the one that decides whether a scope statement survives contact with your diligence process.
- Confirmed today — engineering and field execution
- Decommissioning engineering and planning, project scoping and execution planning, technical project management, national technical field crews, on-site technical execution, and equipment de-racking and removal as part of a managed decommissioning project. - Confirmed today — custody and sanitization
- Serialized inventory, chain of custody, secure receiving, and NIST 800-88 Revision 2 sanitization of the storage media in AI systems with a certificate issued per serial. Performed in our own R2v3 and RIOS certified facility.
- Confirmed today — recovery
- Technical inspection and grading to the level our current capability supports, component recovery and parts harvesting, reuse and redeployment assessment, remarketing, and structured buyback and revenue-share arrangements. Where reuse or resale is not appropriate, material is consigned to qualified, certified downstream recyclers under our R2v3 Appendix A downstream vendor management scope — the physical recycling is performed by those vendors, not by us.
- Deliberately not claimed — accelerator memory
- No standards body has published a sanitization procedure for accelerator memory. NIST 800-88 Revision 2 does not address it, IEEE 2883-2022 does not address it, and no manufacturer publishes one. We do not claim a verified process for something no standard defines, and we would be sceptical of any provider who does. What we do instead is set out below.
- Deliberately not claimed — specialist functions
- Certain functions are outside our current scope and are handled by a specialist partner under a named scope, or not offered: teardown of liquid-cooled systems, fluid handling, specialist heavy rigging beyond managed project removal, sustained functional testing of accelerator compute nodes, and manufacturer diagnostic programmes. Where one of these is required, we say so at scoping and name who performs it.
Certificate of Value Recovery
What each asset returned, recorded against its serial
Accelerated hardware concentrates a great deal of value into a small number of components, and those components frequently sell in mixed lots. That makes a lump-sum recovery statement almost impossible to check.
We provide a Certificate of Value Recovery alongside the data-destruction certificates in the closeout package. It records disposition outcome and gross recovery per serial, marks each figure as observed or allocated, names the allocation methodology where one was applied, and attributes harvested-component proceeds back to the parent asset. It evidences commercial outcome only — sanitization is certified separately, per device.
